momstown Gives Back: Food Bank Edition

October 16, 2014momstownFamily LifeNo comments
Anyone at anytime can fall down on hard times and need to make use of a food bank. Edmonton’s Food Bank helps out a lot of those people who have fallen on hard times. And sadly, many of those people are children. momstown Edmonton wants to help.

Did you know that Edmonton's Food Bank was the first food bank established within Canada? And our food bank helps a lot of people–14,000 hampers go out every month to people and families in need. Every month, the food bank supplies over 350,000 meals and snacks throughout their various affliated agencies. Sadly, too many of these meals and snacks go towards children. Approximately 40% of the clients who make use of the food bank are children. In 2012 alone, Edmonton's Food Bank helped 15,561 children!

momstown Edmonton believes in being active in our community. In the past we have donated blood, raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society with Team in Training ($75,000 so far!), and helped deliver gifts with Santas Anonymous. This year, we want to be even more active and "give where we live." In order to do so, we are organizing our very first food drive!  At all regular hosted programs in the month of November, we will be collecting donations for the food bank. Just bring your donation, give it to us, and we will collect them. Then, in December we will bring everything that we have collected to Edmonton's Food Bank as a group! We will also receive a tour to really see how all those meals and snacks get out to those who need them.

Let's fill those shelves mamas! These are the most needed items at Edmontons' Food Bank:

  • Beans with or without pork
  • Canned fish or meat
  • Baby formula
  • Peanut butter
  • Soup
  • Canned fruit or vegetables
  • Pasta & pasta sauce
  • Juice boxes
  • School Snacks
  • Monetary donations are also gratefully accepted.

Other suggestions include household cleaners, shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste & toothbrushes, baking supplies, diapers, and feminine hygiene products.

Remember mamas, bring your donations to any regular programs and give them to Miss Heather, Miss Sarah, or Miss Brooke in November. Any donation, big or small, is appreciated!
